I have not read said article yet but I think you make a good point here. First and foremost we are human and that qualifies unless shown otherwise to treat each other with dignity and respect. Experience and perspective provides context and I agree we should always bear that in mind.
That said there is a difficult line to tread between dwelling and reinforcing the negative consequences of the systems that in place or becoming so entrenched in the problem you unknowingly add to it instead of helping. I recently came across Trabian Shorts who advocates asset framing i.e. Focusing on a persons aspirations while acknowledging their challenges. I think there is a lot to take from his approach.
