June: Just As I Am

What This Revolution of the Sun Taught Me

Who is Jesse?

These words fired from my coach's mouth echoed around my head like a pinball falling down the table, trickling out of time.

The jeopardy of each ricochet and missed opportunity — physically palpable — heart pounding, brain pressing against the back of my eyeballs.

One slot is all it takes to reward its victor handsomely and yet the possibility slips by.

As I process the question, I repeat the words over and over again.

Who is Jesse? I ask myself, pausing to inhale, opening my mouth to answer.

But, I have nothing substantial, only a head full of trite definitions.

That was many, many months ago, and here I am to this day in the month of June, still wrestling and modelling different answers.

I am reminded this month that just as my morning dog walks are filled with gratitude for birdsong and peaceful solitude, personal growth is as much about the sanctuaries we create and the space we make for…
