If you had said that one day I would be sitting and writing about Grace Jones, I would have said to you get out of here, but yesterday, a social media post celebrating her birthday prompted me to reflect on this iconic figure.

You wouldn’t guess she is an almost octogenarian based on how she looks and still cavorts the stage.

The style icon, actress, singer, songwriter and model, not one to be conventional, defies age expectations with her energy, panache and grace.

At 75 years of age, she still commands the stage with hit tunes, such as Slave to the Rythm, but get this: She does so in 6-inch high heels while hula hooping.

It appears bizarre, but then why not? I am in awe of her combining two skills I have failed to master.

Back in the ’80s, when I first heard her songs and watched her pop videos and movies, I remember a conservative teenager me, felt a mixture of confusion leaning towards dislike because…
