What I love about summer
A response to a Lucy King prompt
When I read Lucy’s prompt I immediately started thinking of the memorable Ella Fitzgerald song Summertime. For me, the words and how she sings encapsulate what summer is about.
Summertime, an’ the livin’ is easy!
I live for summer, the time when vacations and the plans you base around the promise of good weather come into fruition. The time when lazy mornings and easy evenings remind you of all that is good. Summertime for me is a time full of happy memories from way back when I used to enjoy the long school holidays to more recently my yearly pilgrimage to catch more sun, heat and relaxation.
I say this because the other day I was reminded why location and context are important. Recently I had the opportunity to moan and chuckle at the sight of our local supermarket celebrating in their words “The best of a British summer”. They had gone to the trouble of setting up in the car park open marquees with a BBQ, products they wanted to sell and bunting.
I thought this was a fantastic idea, the only problem was everyone was huddled under the open marquees for shelter because it was raining!— It made me chuckle because it reminded me of a typical British summer, a few good days of sunshine and BBQ’s in the glorious rain.
